Academic success does not come easily. A person can go to school every day and still not have the drive to succeed. The final push, the greatest influence comes from something not in school. It comes from a family member, a role model, or almost anybody or anything. For me, I doubt that I could have done what I have without my parents. They are my inspirations. They are the people who mean the world to me and the people I know will catch me anytime I fall.

Both my parents started from humble backgrounds and worked their way up. They both went to Boston University to get degrees in engineering. They struggled to stay afloat between multiple jobs and classes. Out of college they found jobs in their field and became successful. My dad still works at the same company that he began at out of college. My mom rose to a high position at her job before leaving it to tend to my brother and me at home. When they tell us stories from their academic lives I am always filled with pride. My parents fought to get where they are. I want to fight to make them proud. I may not be following their footsteps exactly, but I am determined to carve my own path because of them.

My dad is a quiet man, but mess with him and he will fight back. He has very strong ideas and morals, and is not afraid to speak his mind. I love this about him, even if he does scare me sometimes. I look up to how in control he seems to be. He even helps me with school work whenever I am lost or in doubt. I have gone to him with everything from English to math and he almost always has an answer. If not, he knows how to find one. No matter what life throws at him he will always be my strong, heroic dad.

The other huge role model in my life is my mom. Her situation and perseverance has given me hope and strength beyond imagine. She was diagnosed with Multiple sclerosis before I was born. In short, this disease affects the brain and nervous system. This disease impeded her advancement in life and work. She was unable to perform tasks like she used to. When she had my brother she dropped work and became a stay at home mom. I believe that this was the smartest decision she could have made at the time. Being a stay at home mom allowed her to create a home, a safe haven to come to. I feel at peace when I am home with her. I know I can succeed when I have her support. Her life might not be the best, but she made it the best she could. I am so proud to be her daughter and I strive every day to do my best for myself and for her. Life can throw anything in my direction and I know I can face it head on because of her.

Parents are such an important part of a child’s life, especially during the beginning of their lives. The learning and support that are built up at home lay the foundation for the academic success that will take place in schools. The school system can be long and tough to make it through alone. Parents who care for their child will set them up for success. That is what my parents did and I am still going strong today. I feel the urge to learn and to succeed in life. I would have never gained those skills without their all-important help. They have served me well all through school and in life up to now, and I know they will continue to help me through life.
